The editorial suggests that a ban on bullhooks is a de facto ban on performing elephants. Yet Tilikum, the poor Orca who killed his trainer at SeaWorld (Watch Blackfish, CNN Thurs 9pm) is still on display though he is no longer allowed contact with trainers. While other wild animals can perform in Los Angeles, the circuses will still come, and if they are allowed elephants but no bullhooks that could just mean more chains. It is the confinement, the traveling, the chains, that are most cruel to the elephants -- the cornerstones of circus life. We should be banning that cruelty from our city with pride, as other cities/countries have done, not pussyfooting around with de facto measures that may not have the intended effect. latimes/opinion/editorials/la-ed-bullhook-elephant-proposed-ban-los-angeles-20131022,0,6908333.story#axzz2iV86xmdK
