The end of cheques? According to a recent report on the development of the digital economy, the Australia Payments Clearing Association (APCA) has predicted that we may see the end of cheques by 2020. Over the past 10 years, cheque usage has fallen by more than 60%, from 50,000 cheques a month to less than 20,000. Despite this decrease in cheque usage almost 1 in 3 Australians continue to hold a cheque account, according to RFi data. In 2012, APCA conducted research into industry and consumer sentiment regarding adopting policies to phase out cheques. Following this research it was concluded that it was best to allow cheques to phase out with time rather than implementing any policies designed to decrease cheque usage.
