The essence of creating good film music requires not simply a solid background in composition and a unique creative sound, but the ability to subsume that creativity to the needs of the film. To be able to compose a memorable theme for instance, that stands alone, apart from the film, but also precisely serves the needs of the film – that is the art of film scoring. I can think of no better example than Lalo Schifrin’s opening music from DIRTY HARRY (1971). Every inch a jazz-funk classic that never sounds anything except a cohesive, tight piece of music, it also exactly mirrors and augments the visuals onscreen. Note especially Eastwood’s initial entrance, the rising strings as the camera pans up the building, the camera panning to see Harry’s POV of the lower rooftop, his eye catching the spent cartridge and finally seeing Scorpio’s warning note – all brilliantly and precisely underscored whilst simultaneously the whole piece never seems contrived or piecemeal. Genius IMHO. - Steve Saragossi
