The estate was every bit as drab and eerie as it had seemed when Bartholomew had visited during Christmas break. The mansion stood in a state of disarray. Three gargantuan stories of largely unused rooms, most of the windows still shuttered from the winter. Stray shingles littered a front lawn as yellow as the taxi drivers teeth. Bartholomew was suddenly thankful that the drive and the surrounding walls made it nearly impossible for outsiders to see how shameful the place looked. He demanded that the driver stop the taxi before it breached the smaller wall of the inner courtyard that surrounded the greenhouse and the garden fountains and fixtures. He handed the man nearly twice what the ride cost and begged him through clenched teeth to keep the trip and their meeting a private affair. The driver seemed acquiescent save for one condition, I dont mind keeping your secrets, sir, but if you dont mind my saying so, the place looks like it could use some sprucing up. Mind if I send my cous around. Hes got him a crew of lads who could get your grounds looking ship shape in no time.
