The ethnic composition of the Republic of Ireland is comprised of several groups. Norman settlers were assimilated into the pre existing Irish population. The Country was not an Anglo Saxon Country before the Normans, and the Normans did not migrate to Ireland in sufficent numbers to change the Country to be otherwise, as is evidenced in history, like the Ostrogoths who migrated to Italy but did not change the Country. The same happened with the Vikings. The Protestant Reformation reduced the affects the British had over the Irish, and the Irish Catholics remained separate and distinct from Britain. Later settlers were absorbed into Ireland, like the Ostrogoths in Italy. The people of Republic of Ireland are the Hiberno Irish.
