The excitement at SHALVA was at its peak this morning, as 180 SHALVA children and just as many staff departed for a week of overnight summer camp in Eilat. Today we are kicking off camp with a day at the Super Land amusement park, to be followed by non-stop fun and activities throughout the week. The children are on cloud nine- and their parents and siblings are too! While SHALVA children have the time of their lives at camp, their families will enjoy an eight day-long respite period to vacation, rest, and reenergize. This year, SHALVA’s summer camp has taken on an especially important role due to Israel’s current security situation. Parents of children with special needs have experienced weeks on end of intense worry and constant carrying for their children. This year we have two special summer camp additions: 1)Children with disabilities residing in Southern Israel have joined us for summer camp! These children and their families can now enjoy a well deserved break from living under the constant threat of rockets. 2)Some of our dedicated camp counselors who were just released from military service in Gaza this week are joining us as well! Instead of spending their military leave resting at home, they find that volunteering with SHALVA will rejuvenate their energies all the more so.
