The experience of one face, not particularly attractive nor compelling, that stands out in a crowd is a source of constant fascination. Say youre walking along in an airport, a stadium, whatever, and you pass someone with the sense that said person stands far more in the foreground than the background of the sea of faces. Why? Is it that my brain fires up at recognized elements that I know from the features of others in my acquaintance? Why does this random person whom I do not know draw my attention so strongly?
