The fate of the general bus stand at Jammu hanging in balance for the past more than two decades so far its shifting and its improvement is concerned due to government’s apathy should not come as a surprise for the commuters. For many years, the government and its agencies connected with the upkeep of the bus stand have been preparing plans one after the other but nothing has been done on the ground till date. Unfortunately, the improvement of the area has been pending for decades together. At the first instance, this was to be developed as main transit point for the commuters and separate bus stands were to be carved in different corners of the city for parking of buses. But this plan has gone haywire after some objections from the citizens besides half-hearted approach of the authorities in acquisition of land for creating bus depots on the outskirts of the city. Same is the case with creation of new bus stands in other towns of the state. The government and its agencies have utterly failed in giving shape to the plans for the convenience of the commuters. The idea of making the present bus stand as the main transit point for all sorts of bus services appears to have been dropped by the government for the reasons best known to it. In the absence of any such facility the commuters have been facing many problems and they are forced to walk on foot to reach their destinations because there is no commuter service connected with various bus stands which have been carved out in different parts of the city for different routes. The worst sufferers are the students, who have to reach different bus stands on their own from their institutions. The government needs to act fast on this issue and prepare a comprehensive plan for a main transit bus stand and implement it at the earliest for the convenience of the people, who are the major chunk using the commuter services.
