The fifth red bulb was added to the “Keep the Wreath Green” - TopicsExpress

The fifth red bulb was added to the “Keep the Wreath Green” wreath on Christmas Day. An extension cord overloaded with holiday decorations caused a fire on the front porch of the house. The family was not home at the time, and there were no injuries. Damage is estimated at $10000, and the family was able to stay in their home. Electrical failures or malfunctions are factors in nearly two-thirds of fires involving holiday or decorative lights. • One of the best ways to protect against holiday light/decoration fires is to ensure they are plugged into a surge protector. If lights, or any electronic device/situation, exceed the designated level of flow of electricity, the surge protector will trip, or shut down, to prevent damage to electronic devices as well as fires. • Ensure you are using a multi-strip with a breaker, not a power strip, which essentially provides multiple outlets but no protection. • Using different outlets and fewer extension cords is another way to reduce the likelihood of overloading an electrical system. • Avoid piggybacking any type of power cord such as multiple extension cords or power strips plugged together, making a chain of cords.
