The final schedule for 2014 ORK paddles is to the press. look for it soon! Our first paddle is in March. March 15, 2014 – George L. Smith State Park – An easy paddle and beautiful in the spring. We will paddle from the dam up into the head waters of the mill pond and Fifteen Mile Creek. Near Twin City, this large cypress lake with ten miles of canoe trails is part of the Canoochee River a Ogeechee sub-watershed. Meet up at the ranger station at 9:00 am. Call Gerry Cowart 912-658-2494, or email gcowart@cowart group for questions. ORK Wilderness Experience: 2-3 Hours depending on conditions. Guide, Instruction, Naturalist, Riverkeeper interaction. Cost/ donation to ORK $25.00 for ORK members. $35 non ORK members includes one year membership. Boat and Gear rental available, Contact Gerry Cowart. Monthly river wilderness paddles, 3rd Saturday of month at 9:00 a.m., March through October. See, ogeecheeriverkeeperorg/events. Paddle Guides – Gerry Cowart, Charles Lewis, Tim Goodson, Scott Richards, Thomas Angell. Shuttle logistics worked out by ORK. Put-in and take out well planned by ORK. Safety Boats –All of the above guides at different times, Sweeper and lead boat. Paddle Instruction – prior to each paddle: Boat fit and engagement, balance. Paddle use and strokes basics – forward, backward. Safety Check: Life jacket – fit Self-rescue, exit & re-entry demonstration. Strainers – what are they and how to avoid them. River hydrodynamics/ current & its effect on your boat control. Advanced instruction at lunch break: Boat architecture, leaning, chine, advanced control. Advanced paddle strokes, Greenland paddle use – optimum stroke efficiency. Reading River Hydro Morphology, crossing current, sandbars, eddies, current speeds. River Passion: Water Quality, the effect on your health, effect on wildlife. Basic water testing, pH, turbidity, dissolved oxygen. What ORK tests and how often, how to help. Clean water, Restoration, preservation and protection. River Cleanups sponsored by ORK. How to fight for clean water in your community. List of things to bring: Camera, water proof or in a water tight bag. Lunch, snack and plenty to drink. Hat, Gloves if you have tender hands, Rain jacket, Good water shoes. Sunscreen, insect repellent. Change of clothes, extra clothes. Plan now which paddles you want to attend and tell your friends. Gerry
