The fire that gutted a Matata house yesterday afternoon is believed to have been deliberately lit. Firefighters suspect the blaze began around the garage on the bottom story of the house. When they arrived, flames had burnt into the top level to a lounge and kitchen area, weakening the floor so firefighters could not fight the blaze from inside. Eastern Bay fire safety officer Jon Rewi will be at the house today investigating the cause of the fire.
