The first US troops have returned to Germany after their mission in Africa to help fight the Ebola epidemic. They will spend three weeks at a U.S. Army-run Ebola monitoring facility on the Army’s Smith Barracks in Baumholder, not far from Kaiserslautern. While the troops housed there are not at risk of infection, the period of medical monitoring serves as an extra layer of precaution. While there are far fewer US soldiers in Germany now than during the Cold War, tens of thousands still are based in Germany.
