The first b/w photo was taken in July 1933 and shows swimmers at the Gem Lake Swimming Pool, which was located near 5307 Gem Lake Road. In the photo you are looking toward the west, where beyond the wall there seems to be a lake. The second b/w photo shows two of my aunts posing at Gem Lake Swimming Pool with friends sometime in the late 1940s. Both of them drowned at Buffalo Lake in either 48 or 49 when their rented sailboat capsized. That means the second photo was taken sometime before then. The third photo shows a birds-eye view of the dilapidated swimming pool today. And the fourth photo shows apartments on Gem Lake Road, behind which the remains of the old swimming pool are hiding today. I am not sure when the swimming pool was first opened, but I think it was somewhere about 1930 because that was when it started to be mentioned in newspaper articles. The City of Amarillo considered buying the swimming pool in 1951, but apparently did not because Dory Funk Sr. and another man bought the swimming pool and had it remodeled in 1957, adding underwater lighting, a sunbathing deck, a separate diving area, and a fenced-in baby pool. The swimming pool was closed in 1962 when a 20-unit apartment complex was built on the site. All this information was gathering from pieces of different newspaper articles. If someone has swum in the pool after 1962, then I guess I got it wrong.
