The first big climb of the day ends atop this spine between Cascade Lake (to the right) and Emerald Bay (to the left). Geologically it is a lateral morraine separating the two glacial scours that formed the lakes many thousands of years ago. The elevation here is 6,776 ft—more than 500 ft above the lake level (which sits at 6,224 ft). I have always wanted to photograph from this spot but it is too dangerous to stop a car. On a bike, however...
