The first day of classes at Hampden-Sydney College was November 10, 1775 (which also happens to be be the same day that the U.S. Marine Corps was founded). The Celestial Planisphere on the fourth floor dome of Bortz Library shows the position of the stars on that day. The Wilson Center for Leadership in the Public Interest now marks Founders Day with an annual lecture. This years speaker is Dr. Eugene Hickok ’72, former deputy secretary of the U.S. Department of Education and Bradley Fellow in Education at The Heritage Foundation in Washington, D.C.
