The first known interest holder of this house was Sarah Thurber - TopicsExpress

The first known interest holder of this house was Sarah Thurber (d/o Joseph Haines). Her husband was Albert Thurber (s/o George). Albert and Sarah were the grandparents of Delta Hooper. This property was known as 1/4th of the homestead property of Joseph Haines when Sarah sold the house to her sister Rubina Haines in 1887. The price Rubina paid for the house was a low $145 but the deed mentioned houses, outhouses, barns, buildings, edifices, fences, improvements, profits and title homestead Interest. In addition, the construction of this house (gothic) tends to be older than the late 1880s. Capt. Albert Thurber was the captain of the Venus. There is a possibility that this could have been Joseph Haines home and/or John and Catherine Dentons house. It is possible that Albert and Sarah first lived here and then moved next door (Sidney and Delta Hoopers). Rubina Haines sold the house in 1925 to Charles Musgrave for $900. In Rev. Walter R. Greenwoods History of Freeport, Nova Scotia : 1784-1934, he states that Joseph Haines lived where Charles Musgraves house now stands (not believed to be the same house, but Greenwoods book appears riddled with errors). 1871 census shows John Denton living in the house between Albert Thurber and James Nickerson (James Nickerson lived in the house owned later by Ted Morrell). This makes one believe that this was John Dentons house (maybe he was renting from Albert and Sarah). Rubina Haines was living with John Denton and his wife at this time at the age of fifteen. Rubina Haines (1856-1927) married her third cousin Edgar Balcolm Haines (s/o Samuel). They had two children: Mabel and Samuel. On August 14th, 1893, we see that Capt. Edgar Haines was making plans to have a new shop built opposite his residence. Capt. Edgar Haines and Howard Teed set sail in the 100 ton schooner Abbie M. Derring- destination, the Klondike. Capt. Edgar Haines was the first photographer in Freeport. He first had his studio at Albert Thurbers store (later owned by son Ervin). On June 6th, 1893, Capt. Edgar Haines bought the store on the east corner of Water street from Stephen Westcott. Captain Edgar Haines was a very ambitious man. Charles Musgrave married Hazel Churchill (1887-1954). Hazel was the eighth child of Ephraim Churchill. After Charles death, she married John Finnigan. Hazel was a sister to Lloyd Blackfords wife Helen. Charles spent most of his life in the United States. Melvin Tibert was the son of Clarence Tibert of Central Grove and he married Florence Wallis of Digby (d/o James). They had four children: Melvin Jr., Bonnie, June, and Connie. Melvin Jr. took his life at an early age. Today two of Mel and Florries children hold title to the house. Florrie now resides in Digby. Florrie taught school in Freeport for many years and Melvin was a fisherman. More on Klondike - Capt. Haines, who goes as navigator, although not an old man, is an experienced ship-master, and for a number of years was master of a large Yarmouth ship. The captain is very enthusiastic over the seaworthiness and sailing qualities of their present craft, although she is not built on the large scale his former ships were. He is none the less sure there is lots of gold up the Yukon and does not see why men from here cannot get a fair share as well as those of no more experience from other places. Architecture Looking closer at this home, and to add to the historical comment, it appears to have an early gothic look (possibly 1830s style). This gives reason to believe that it may have been Joseph Haines home (Sarah and Rubinas father). Joseph died prior to 1871 and John and Catherine Denton were between the Nickersons (Ted Morrells) home and Albert Thurber (Sid Hoopers?) present day neighbors. The family of Joseph Haines may have all had an interest in his estate and the aforementioned 1887 deed may have just been a conveyance of Sarahs interest to her sister. John and Catherine may have moved in to the home after Joseph died. This is a beautiful gothic home with a true gothic window. The porch over the front doorway is bracketed with an artistic flavour. The windows are heavily capped. There are large returns on the home. The rear of the home and the bay window on the west side are probably later additions.
