The first pineapples (rough-leafed) are thought to have been introduced to Australia from India in 1838 by a German missionary, although some records indicate that pineapples were grown near Sydney as early as 1824. The first commercial plantings were established in Nundah (now a suburb of Brisbane) in the early 1840’s (Lewcock, 1939). Smooth Cayenne came from Kew Gardens in England probably around 1858 (Collins, 1960). The main pineapple growing areas at that time were Saint Lucia, Fortitude Valley and Kangaroo Point (with its Pineapple Hotel). Production spread to Wavell Heights, Zillmere (there’s still a Pineapple St there) and continued its spread north from there.
