The first sign that something has gone wrong is when an unknown variable enters in to the equation. Depending on the length and complexity of the undertaking you will either have to adapt for the new variable or abandon the project completely. In either case you will want to learn as much about the random variable as possible, to either prevent it from ruining your project or to control it in future projects that may involve it. Generally it is better to invest as little as possible in an unknown then gable on everything still working like it was supposed to-JB
