The first test of the Shinkansen on the island of Hokkaido took place yesterday. The planned start date of Shinkansen service to Hakodate is spring 2016. Eventually, the Shinkansen service will extend all the way to Sapporo. But that is not scheduled to happen until 2035. The new Shinkansen line will take an inland route through Niseko and Otaru before ending in Sapporo rather than along the Pacific coastline as the current express trains do today.
