The first track recorded in winter (February, I think) 1999 as part of the proper Volume One sessions (i.e. Joe and I with Neal Ostrovsky engineering), this track was a brand new song - DEEPLY and heavily influenced by the unforgettable band Broadcast, whose Work and Non Work compilation wed discovered playing in a shop in Camden Town. The rather insistent advice wed been given by folks I was still willing to listen to in my late 20s was to record to 2 tape and make indisputably hi fi sounding recordings - very good advice, as it turned out to be in the case of this song and record. It caught us at a time when the arrangements had a great deal of space in them, and something like THIS song could really be built from the ground up. One of Joes greatest contributions was to double track a tom fill with two different tape speeds (adding an enormous depth to the sound) - this, I believe, was derived from a Small Faces record. The temptation to leave the track instrumental (as I know we did for at least a year or more) was massive - it had all the right sounds and moves, and...seemed more like a sound than a song, as such. Of course, we eventually shoved some lyrics at it/on it, and added female vocals (Laura Katter) which added that final dimension. That said, I remember quite happily and proudly listening to it like this (purely instrumental) for a year, and more or less looking at the inevitable adding of lyrics as more of a chore than as an exciting prospect.
