The flooding which occurred on Thursday 13th November had a huge impact on the housing estates and surrounding areas in Ashbourne. The Office of Public Works recorded the Broadmeadow River at its second highest level ever. Meath County Council has taken the following actions since the flooding occurred; • Visits to all flooded homes by Flood Assessors accompanied by Meath CoCo Engineers • More than two meetings with a representative of the Office of Public Works with visits to the flooded areas • Assessment of the culvert and shore network in Ashbourne by Meath CoCo Engineers • Communication between the Meath CoCo Chief Executive and Local Area Engineers on management and strategy for prevention of flooding in this area • Large delivery of sandbags and sand to the Ashbourne Depot of Meath CoCo which is available to the Public • Discussions with Minister of State with Special Responsibility for the OPW (Flooding) Simon Harris on the flooding in Ashbourne I will be working with Meath County Council to progress a plan with the Office of Public Works for development of a better drainage scheme in Ashbourne which will require large investment and an increase in resources. There is grant funding available for this purpose through the Office of Public Works. As a first step this will include immediate and regular cleaning of drains, rivers and culverts. There is also a huge need for additional Outdoor resource staff in the Ashbourne Area. I have been calling for a greater allocation of Outdoor staff for the Ashbourne Municipal District and this was once again debated at the November meeting of Ashbourne Municipal District. There is a large imbalance in County Meath with regards to Outdoor staff with the Ashbourne Area poorly resourced in comparison to other Electoral Areas. I will keep you updated on further progress.
