The following are used to aid in the diagnosis of CHF: I. B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) level II. Chest X-ray III. Echocardiogram Echocardiogram showing EF of less than 40% (or less than 50% with strict cardiologists) is the definitive diagnosis of CHF. BNP is elevated only during a CHF exacerbation but usually a well compensated CHF will show normal BNP. CXR will show cardiomegaly and possibly pulmonary edema if the heart failure is not well compensated.
