The following is a message I received just a few minutes ago from a former student. Im posting it for all you teachers out there who slave day in and out and think no one ever hears a word... Mr. Barnes, I want to say thank you. WAY back in the 7th grade, you actually made me do work. Thank you for being the only teacher I remember who actually held me to task for anything. Being a so called gifted student was a full of pitfalls for me. I was able to get along on sheer talent for a long time, but I never had any study skills, which made college very difficult. I almost didnt graduate high school due to my poor work ethic. Two weeks from graduation I was failing English, not because I didnt know the content, but because I never did the work. I wanted to say that I appreciate what you were trying to do for me then. Im only sorry that that was a lesson I didnt learn. Hindsight is truly twenty-twenty. I know this is pretty random, but I was suddenly moved to write this. I only hope I can teach my daughter the lesson that I failed to learn from you. And it doesnt say anything about test scores....
