The following is a message from the President of the Kingston - TopicsExpress

The following is a message from the President of the Kingston College Old Boys Association on the recent controversy over an article in the press this week. My Fortis brother: There is no doubt that many of you have been hurt and upset by the column written by Prof Carolyn Cooper. Many of you have expressed your feelings in very strong language and it is said that threats have also been issued against the writer. May I ask that in the midst of our upset and outrage at the column, we refrain from acting out or speaking out in ways that may reduce the stature of the Fortis Man! This is the time for us to rally around Kingston College, especially, our current boys who may be negatively affected by the column. This is an opportunity to teach the boys how to respond to adversity in a manner that would make Bishop Gibson proud. Prof Cooper states that the piece was meant to be satirical. I contend that it was an attempt at satire that fell flat. What is perhaps beyond debate, however, is that it takes little account of the nature of our Jamaican space and the noble nature of the Kingston College tradition. That is the real tragedy here. Having said all that, Prof Cooper and I have been in communication since our appearance on a radio programme Monday evening, and she has acknowledged the trauma caused by her column. It is my hope that further efforts at repair will be forthcoming. We need to stand together as one Fortis Family, supporting each other in the face of a misguided onslaught. May I urge you all to act with the graciousness that is the hallmark of the KC Fraternity, knowing that this will only make us stronger, as the Brave may fall but NEVER yield. Fortis forever!
