The following is my bias opinion mixed sporadically with uncheckable facts. If youre offended by this, its likely you drank the Kool-aid before I got here. I heard SSRIs are the antidote, go take your medicine and scroll past this.-I think a good measure can only be a good measure. But obvious is obvious too. Just like all the other scare the stupid away from the smart things that went viral, like forcing us to microchip ourselves. Just the way this is presented told me its a hoax. BUT, I think its a totally legitimate concern. First, Facebook is legally bound to their privacy policy, that clearly states what they do and do not own. Technically you own everything posted, but that does not mean much online. Just because Facebook doesnt own your photos and such, doesnt mean the internet doesnt possess everything you give it. Public...is public. On top of that, just because Facebook doesnt own your pictures and posts, they still know when, where, and what youre doing when it was posted(unless you change your settings, hopefully you did that a few years ago). If you ignore or assume online privacy then you have NONE, everyone should know this. At this point, realistically, Facebook has basically zero reason to attempt to take possession of what we post. In a practical way, they possess it already, just like everyone else who sees you online. Developing an algorithm to snoop through every post for information to advertise with is probably possible if not real. Idk anything about computers but even if they can do that, the profit would be low in comparison to the information they already sell advertisers. Even though facial and vocal recognition are changing this to an extent, your pictures will never be near as valuable as where and why you posted them. Advertisers dont need your picture, they just need to know where you eat, shop, shit, and waste time taking pictures. You give Facebook the right to sell this information the day you sign up, unless you specify otherwise. Advertisers use this to decide what you like, where you live, what you purchase, if youre wealthy or froogle, and then advertise specifically to you via Youtube ads, Facebook ads, email lists, etc. Notice most of your online adds have some type of relevance to you, even if its just the area you live in. Its not exactly dangerous (yet) but this has been going on for years, not just Facebook but every website you sign up for. The potential and necessary loop holes both exist. I think its already given, you wont ever get full transparency from an entire multi billion dollar industry, especially one that exclusively profits off accurate product placement. There are way more serious imbalances of power in the world, for sure. Even though this is a hoax, it already contains enough truth to be plausible and in my opinion realistic. Legally this could happen tomorrow, and nobody would be required to inform you. Thats another thing you signed up for, Facebook can change their privacy policy any time, with no obligation to tell you. They could assert their power of policy and take possession of everything youve shown them. Its possible that the only way you would find out is because of people posting a status about it. Im not saying they would make such a reckless move anytime soon. Im just pointing out this is not sci-fi like everyone with their google law degrees are making it out to be. Obviously state and federal laws would very quickly trump Facebook policy. But if they did it anyway, they could possess anything and everything about your page, silently, for however long it took the legal system to react. Imagine the wrong group of people gained possession of one the largest international data bases in the world, even for an hour. Worst case scenario? International privacy loss, within a reckless and paranoid species, surrounded by tools of extinction, motivated by self preservation, and already proven savage enough. Luckily, today the executive board of facebook is not plotting a hostile take over of our online secrets, with the intentions to use them to create a global social distrust, and bring upon a 60 minute nuclear holocaust. We wouldnt need an hour for that. But I wasted almost half of one to explain an insignificant issue to a keyboard and a monitor. I didnt skip my shower and breakfast this morning because of empathy or concern for my fellow humans. I just really enjoy being mister know it all, especially if I dont need to use google(
