The forests of the two nature reserves - Cerro Silva and Punta Gorda – In Northeastern Nicaragua are deforested by agricultural expansion. The rich wildlife and the indigenous communities will soon be gone if conservation actions will not be taken. “Recent data from Global Forest Watch, an online forest monitoring system created through a partnership with the World Resources Institute, reveal that approximately 16 and 23 percent of forest cover has been lost in the Cerro Silva and Punta Gorda Nature Reserves, respectively, over a 12-year period from 2001 to 2013. These data were generated by a team from the University of Maryland that examined over 600,000 LANDSAT images in 30-by-30 meter pixels to identify areas in which tree heights dropped below five meters.”
