The fourth Workshop instructor for Longpoint 2015 has submitted his class description. Mike Edelson will teach Longsword Body Mechanics! This workshop will teach students quantifiable and repeatable methods to increase power, speed and control in moving, striking and thrusting with the longsword. Body mechanics is the art/science of moving the entire body, deliberately and in specific sequences, to maximize the potential speed and power of certain actions. Students will be introduced to biomechanical concepts like centering, structure and extension. The application of these and other concepts to longsword fencing will be explained and students will be given drills they can use to ingrain these principles into their fencing to improve performance. Areas covered include stepping with the body rather than the feet, maintaining center to improve structure, using extension and proper grip to maximize reach, control and power, learning not to telegraph intentions (identify and eliminate tells), focusing power and parrying/winding with the body rather than the arms. ------- Michael Edelson is a lifelong student of martial arts with over 30 years of experience. He is the founder and principal instructor of the New York Historical Fencing Association and has taught at events and seminars across the United States and abroad. He is a renowned HEMA tournament fighter and has won over 10 medals in national and international longsword, cutting and grappling tournaments. Michael is best known for his pioneering efforts in bringing systemic cutting practice and competition to HEMA and his extensive work in researching and adapting biomechanics from numerous sources to KDF. He is the current HEMA Alliance Curriculum Council Director and a former member of the governing council.
