The gap between steel and aluminum weight reduction has diminished - TopicsExpress

The gap between steel and aluminum weight reduction has diminished tremendously since the Program for a New Generation of Vehicles of the early 1990s. Aluminum materials have remained essentially the same, and it is a more architecturally robust material because of the thickness advantage over steel. This architectural advantage for aluminum means there is less opportunity for aluminum to provide further weight improvements for improved architecture. Meanwhile, automotive steel architecture and improved steel grades are causing the difference in weight between steel and aluminum construction to diminish, and it probably will continue to diminish in the future.
