The general public must be able to tell what is happening during the race! That means: 1. The boat, wing, jib and crew uniforms should be almost all one color, like a football team. I see Red, I know it is NZ. The Skipper might wear a contrast color, but viewers should be able to easily spot their favorite team/country/boat. 2. The market branding, boat/wing labeling and commentators must decide who the competition is between! If the completion is between U.S. and NZ countries, then boat, wing and uniforms must reflect FIRST reflect the country! NOT sponsor. NOT boat name. Country. If the completion really a fight is between corporate sponsors, fine. Make the event between Oracle and Emirates then. One or the other. NOT either or both. Yes, sponsors can label the huge wing, but the country letters must be the largest, most visible letters on the wing. 3. Arrow symbols indicating current wind direction (and speed), plus direction to next mark must be on TV screen at all times. The wings are hard to tell if the boats are on beats upwind, broad reach or downwind legs. Especially on split tacks to the gates, the general public must be able to tell from the symbols where the wind is coming from, the direction the boat has to go to reach the next gate and their current course. With these symbols on the TV screen at all times, the general public can see at all times what path the Skipper and navigator are heading relative to the race course. 4. In a tacking duel, don’t be afraid to draw yellow lines all over the screen, ala John Madden style: point out and say your what and where expert color man (Gary Jobson again? Dennis Conner?) might to do next. Have them point out where each boat might and has to go.
