The getting-to-know-you game is on! Sandi Sullivan gave me the number 8. Here are 8 things you may or may not know about me. If you want to play, comment on anything in my 8 and Ill give you a number for your revealings. 1- While in high school, I started directing the guitar choir at my hometown Catholic church because the guitarists kept mixing up measure counts at our first rehearsal. This made my marching-band brain crazy and I said so. Somebody responded, well, get up and lead us if you know so much. I got up and led, and we all had fun singing together for years. 2- The Common Woman Chorus in Durham, NC, is my current singing haven, thank you, women, for 20 years of making wonderful music together and still going strong! And we will perform our fall concert tomorrow night! 3- I taught myself to play guitar at 17 by learning the guitar parts to the music we sang in church. The young monks writing guitar/vocal music at that time created outstanding songs, groups like the Monks of the Weston Priory and others. 4- I still have the guitar/vocal music books I borrowed from the church over 30 years ago. Need to pull them out and play a few tunes... 5- While in high school, I, my cousin Johnny, and friend Craig Braquet formed a vocal and guitar trio to sing for Craigs brothers wedding, and then kept singing for weddings occasionally for several years. We measured our success at a wedding by the number of people who cried when we sang. 6- On the OCD spectrum, I was a compulsive counter for much of my life, 12 being my magic focus number, with its factors 3 and 6 being close second favorites. I havent done this in years, and have no clue why my behavior changed. 7- I was one of 2 non-music majors in the 30-voice mixed chorus I sang with at college for 2 years. It was a humbling and an amazing learning experience to be the least musically trained of such a good group. 8- I would shrivel up and die if I had no choral group to sing with. Bet this is no surprise by #8.
