The global treaty on the rights of people with disabilities has reached what has been described as a milestone with ratification by 150 countries. Guyana on Monday became the latest state to ratify the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities which has been in force since 2008. The Convention was adopted by the UN General Assembly in 2006 to ensure that disabled people enjoy the same human rights as everyone else. It has seen one of the fastest rates of ratification of any of the international human rights treaties. The Convention sets out the obligations of states to promote, protect and ensure the rights of all people with disabilities in all areas of life. The Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which monitors how states implement the Convention has called on all the states that have not yet do so to ratify the treaty.
