The gospel music originally sung at revivals and camp meetings in the early nineteenth century and to a large extent was derived from the oral folk tradition. Religious poetry was adapted to familiar songs. Gospel music originally appealed to both white and black Americans; however, by the second half of the nineteenth century, distinct styles began to emerge, though mostly in performance practices rather than in the hymns themselves
