The gourd story. All that bitterness, in one tiny seed. And it grew - in the same soil as the sugarcane, Under the same sun, as yellow corn, Dancing, in white-jasmine scented breeze. But nothing moved its bitter heart; It sent up branches and leaves, and soaked up the sweet morning sun. It put out roots, and drank the earths nectar. And it stored it all in its bitter green flesh. We cooked it this morning, with tamarind and sugar. We salted and stirred; but it only sizzled up bitter memories - Of fields far away, with bullocks and birds and butterflies; But it had nothing happy to say, Because it was so busy, you see, turning everything bitter.
