The government is not a charitable institution, nor should it be. Charity starts with an individual, and grows with cooperation and understanding. Just because I oppose government transfer payments doesnt mean I hate the poor - as any Democrat would suggest. It means I respect people and their right to keep what they earn. I also respect their right to not be charitable, if that is the path they choose. We cannot use government to make Scrooge into a saint. That is oppressive.
