“The government position on this issue is that we don’t accept the term ‘Rohingya”, the statement read, going on to say that the 1982 citizenship law would continue to provide the framework for citizenship. “Among Bengalis living in Rakhine state, anyone who is eligible to be a Myanmar citizen under the 1982 citizenship law will get access to citizenship”, he said. The statement went on to assert that the government would not cave on the issue in the face of mounting international pressure. “…we won’t give citizenship to those who are not eligible, despite whoever is forcing us to grant them citizenship. This is our sovereignty. Western democratic countries including the US and UK also have their own citizenship laws and regulations. They won’t grant citizenship to anyone who is not eligible under these laws regardless of whatever international organization is urging them.”
