The gym I go to is always playing FOX NEWS and Ill admit that in between sets I sometimes find myself watching the program. Last night while I was there one of the issues was the possibility of the Washington Redskins changing their name. Both sides of the issue were fairly represented (Ill give FOX NEWS credit when they do) and both sides brought up some great points. Being from a school with a controversial name, the Sigourney Savages I have to say that Im rather split on the issue and find it to be rather circumstantial. To me I guess it really depends on the nature of the term. If I were an Indian, it wouldnt bother me one bit to see the Oskaloosa Indians, or the Montezuma Braves. As far as Im concerned both are symbolic representations of my people, symbolizing Indians in a positive manner. Yet, I wouldnt be real keen on Savages. Savage is a term that was used to diminish the Indian in a negative light. I get the other side of the coin though too. Tradition is all a part of it too. When I wear clothes that say, Sigourney Savages Im wearing them to support the school that I went to and the athletic programs that I was a part of. I dont wear them to promote anything negative towards Indians. Should some schools have to change their names? I dont know. I mean how many of us would be ok with schools over in other countries calling themselves, The Obese Americans or somehow giving themselves a name that clearly was not representing us in the best light? As far as Im concerned look at the name and truly study it. If it does no harm or sheds positive light, leave it alone. If it is truly insulting, change it. My two cents.
