The heart of the Cubs struggles, part one: Alfonso Soriano is getting paid $5 million this year through the Cubs. The thing is, he doesnt even play for Chicago; he was traded to the Yankees a few years ago. But his jaw-dropping contract requires his former team to pay that much until it expires after this year. $5 million dollars is tied for the fifth highest on the Cubs payroll. Soriano is getting paid more than Jake Arietta, Anthony Rizzo, and Darwin Barney COMBINED. Hes getting paid over $1 million more than Travis Wood, the former Red. Part two: Edwin Jackson, the Cubs starting pitcher, is getting paid $11 million each year through 2016. That makes him the highest-paid Cub right now. However, Jacksons stats arent that valuable. Throughout his career, his ERA is a miserable 4.50, and his record (83-96) isnt particularly great. Since joining the Cubs a few years ago, he has posted a record of 13-25. In 2013, he lost an MLB leading 18 games and set an ERA just under 5.00. I know this has nothing to do with the Reds, but I love sifting through baseball stats, and these caught my eye. In conclusion, I think its safe to say that somebody in the Cubs organization messed up...big time.
