The highland branch CWU abstained from voting at Conference on the motion to persuade Scottish colleagues to vote no. Their view was to let members decide for themselves. Area rep delivery (S McLeod) organised a debate in October last year on independence. Rhoda Grant for Labour (No) and Colin Fox for Scottish Socialist Party (YES) gave their speeches. Colin Fox gave a speech that demolished the No argument on economic, intellectual and moral grounds. I became a Yes voter there. I can change my mind when persuasive new evidence is made available. That has not happened. The No campaign has failed to strike me with fear. Please look at the bigger picture with the Conference motion. It only represented a naive view from a fish bowl containing a majority of branches who fear losing our solidarity. I feel we can set an example with independence and remind the membership that union solidarity must have no borders.
