The highly popular womens clothing chain Sportsgirl is stocking a number of clothing items containing angora rabbit wool this season. They have stated that all the wool is sourced from China from suppliers that are signatories of their code of conduct and that the rabbits are sheared with scissors or electric razors 5-6 times per year. We can assure you that these farms are factory farms, where rabbits are kept in wire cages for the entirety of their miserable lives, being taken out only to go through the severely stressful shearing process. Investigations by PETA earlier this year into Chinas angora wool industry have proven just how cruel angora rabbit farms truly are. As you will be aware, China has absolutely no animal welfare laws and although Sportsgirl claim the suppliers are signatories of their code of conduct, this will be covering the rights of the human workers who make the angora garments (ensuring they receive adequate pay etc.) rather than protecting the animals. There is no one protecting these rabbits. Please let Sportsgirl know your thoughts on their use of angora fur via their contact form here: sportsgirl.au/contacts and their Facebook page: https://facebook/sportsgirl?fref=ts
