The highly versatile technique of Katagatame (Shoulder Hold). The bad guys arm is trapped between your neck and shoulder (students are told to hunch up their shoulder toward their neck). A circular motion with your arm is used to trap and wrap the offending arm just above the elbow joint. The circular motion is needed to turn the arm over so pressure can be applied downward to the elbow. Of course, an appropriate atemi or strike to vital spot would have been administered just prior to this action. Skillful taisabaki (body management, in this case a turning or pivoting action) serves to unbalance assailant and augment pressure on joint. At this point, defender has several options. He can hold attacker in place, he can throw him, or slam him to the ground face first (as for the latter, who among us hasnt wanted to do this after a bad day at work?). Zanshin or alert mind completes the action. We practice two main categories of Katagatame: Katagatame Gyaku (gyaku here refers to a reverse action on the joint, implying a joint lock), and Katagatame Osae (a hold down or immobilization technique). For you technical buffs, there is a third type: kenyoho, a combination of joint lock and hold down. This painful and useful lock can be found in Jujitsu, Judo, Aikido, Hapkido, and Ninjutsu (where it is sometimes called Gansekinage or Rock Throw - throwing the opponent like throwing a rock). It also has many applications and variations in grappling. Personally, I like to use it on the UPS or Fedex guy when hes late with my package. He wont be late next time.
