The history of country music is overflowing with classic LPs, but if you were going to put together a care package for a desert island, these five albums will do you good.  Willie Nelson – Red Headed Stranger After signing with Columbia Records on a contract that gave him unlimited creative freedom, Nelson knocked out this incredible, sparse concept album that tells the tale of a fugitive on the run from the law. Merle Haggard – Okie From Muskogee Recorded live in a small town in Oklahoma, this live record gives you a portrait of Haggard at the top of his game, presenting impeccable performances of some of the legend’s greatest hits. Johnny Cash – At Folsom Prison Another live album, this one put the Man in Black in front of an audience of hardened criminals. Cash’s raw, spare delivery and bleak songs resonated perfectly with the inmates, and the atmosphere is inimitable. Townes Van Zandt – For The Sake Of The Song Van Zandt’s 1968 debut album introduced one of the greatest songwriters of all time to the world, and even though he was never recognized by a mainstream audience he made a huge impact on the world of country music. Dolly Parton – Jolene Recorded after parting ways with Porter Wagoner, this was the album where Parton took creative control of her career with exceptional results, making her one of the medium’s most famous female voices.
