The honorary mayor of Mammoth Lakes, Jeff Varon, is making his return (or is it the prodigal son? The pride and joy?). He received a letter from the city council this year after he missed the 4th of July parade for the first time in 30 years. It appears that they delayed the start time of the parade this year thinking that Jeff must have just overslept. He is the Grand Marshal 13 years running since town founder Dave McCoy gave up the job prior to his death. But Jeff never showed and the parade was a sad empty shell of its usual glory. The 4 rusty trailors loaded with towns people waiving flags just didn’t look as amazing as it usually had. There has been a lot of inner turmoil amongst the town folks. Is Jeff okay? Is Jeff cheating on us with another mountain town? Are we not pretty anymore? But all is well now as Jeff will be reuniting with his people. Jeff has been packing for 10 days for his 8 day trip to Mammoth Lakes. The boat is loaded with supplies (the boat does not see any actual water time, and truth be told, Jeff doesn’t know if it will run, or even float, but it makes for a tremendous cargo trailer) and Jeff will be on the road Friday morning. His stay will include a Blues and Brews festival that they are having to celebrate his return. Dave will be making the trip to the party, and I might even stop in for some Brews if I can pass on the Blues.
