The honour code was the one part of the Sewanee ethos which I internalized organically. It always amazed, astonished and stupefied me to realize how much cheating went on among my peers at my undergraduate schools and later in medical school. I simply could not comprehend it. Somewhere in the back of my mind there was always Waldo or ML Agnew, the latter saying sternly, "Be sure your sin will find you out." Of course, I also internalized the prohibition against being a rat, so that I never felt compelled to turn in my comrades who cheated. But I did let them know that I thought they were behaving dishonourably. Fat lot of good that ever did me.
