The hours that teens and adolescents log on their phones every day, receiving and responding to thousands of messages actually helps develop literacy skills and an interest in reading, contends Nancy Niemi, chair of UNH’s education department. “You want your kids to learn that reading isn’t something that’s just associated with school, it can be a pleasurable activity that they can enjoy for the rest of their lives,” she said.
