The human ego is an incredulous entity. It will take a certain being to the top of a mountain and leave another on the valley floor. It will withstand an eternity of abuse but be broken by a single word. We all have an ego, positive or negative, that takes us to the places we let it. It has killed strong men and killed the weak. One person that I had the privilege of calling grandmother knew how to balance this abrasive yet supporting entity. She was what she needed to be when it was needed. She dealt with men that she never should have and always carried a smile so nobody else could tell. She was a shepherd of black sheep, took the weak, wounded and weary and gave them purpose and promise. No words well ever even begin to describe the shame and cowardice I have for not saying the proper apologies and the genuine thank yous that I needed to say until she was on her death bed. It wasnt enough and never will be. Ive no clue what happens after death and, so, I will never know of these feeble words made it to her always listening ears or not. All I know, as a guilty grandchild, is that my ego will never know peace.
