The hurricane season in the eastern Pacific Ocean has been very active this year. Eleven named tropical cyclones have already formed in the eastern Pacific Ocean. Tropical storm Julio that formed yesterday is following almost the same path as hurricane Iselle toward the central Pacific and the Hawaiian Islands. The TRMM satellite flew over tropical storm Julio on August 5, 2014 at 0944 UTC and collected data used in these images. The first image shows a rainfall analysis derived from TRMMs Microwave Imager (TMI) and Precipitation Radar (PR) overlaid on an enhanced GOES-WEST image received at 0930 UTC. TRMM found that some rain bands southeast of Julios center of circulation contained showers falling at a rate of almost 91 mm (about 3.6 inches) per hour. The second image shows a simulated 3-D view of tropical storm Julios rainfall structure based on reflectivity data the precipitation radar instrument. Some heavy rainfall within bands moving around Julios southern side returned values of over 50dBZ to the satellite. Some intense thunderstorms in this area were found by TRMM PR to reach to heights of about 14km (8.7 km).
