The idea of wearing the hijab did not happen overnight for me. In a nutshell, the beginning of my journey towards Islam and the hijab started when my brother passed away in 2007. SubhanAllah, this had pushed me to turn towards the straight path. I realized I had been lost for many years, looking for happiness in all the wrong places. While busy with my career, I started to pray again, which led me to go for umrah, then I got married, Alhamdulilah. About a year before I decided to go for hajj in 2013 with my mom and husband, I used to daydream about wearing the hijab, what that actually means and how it would change my life. I then started taking Islamic classes, to read and understand the Quran and the deen, mentally and spiritually preparing myself for hajj. I wanted to come back home, a changed person and detach myself from the old life I was living, detach myself to all the worldly things I loved and grew up with. Sometimes people ask me if my husband forced me to wear the hijab, in fact he didn’t, he would’ve supported me whatever my decision was and alhamdulilah, that was made while I was in Makkah and in Arafat. The decision was to submit myself completely to Allah s.w.t, as any believing woman should, to repent and taubat, ask for forgiveness and start a new life. InsyaAllah my hajj is accepted and I never turned back. Even though I was born a muslim, today I feel like I’m a revert. Wearing the hijab and taking on my responsibilities as a Muslim woman makes me feel free, protected and safe. It makes me feel respected and at peace with myself. I thank and praise Allah s.w.t for guiding me to Islam and I have never been happier! I pray that more sisters will have the courage to wear the hijab, sacrifice for the sake of Allah s.w.t, do what pleases him and insyaAllah more doors will open. May Allah keep us all steadfast in this deen (religion), ameen.
