The identity thieves are getting more inventive. Occasionally, my bank will check with me about an attempt to use my debit card in some faraway place, and Ill say no, Im not there, and the fraudulent charge will be denied. But some folks are getting their accounts cleaned out and that means a prolonged process of dealing with the aftermath. My solution is simple. Keep the bulk of your money in several different accounts, a credit union is best. Only transfer to your debit-card account what youre actually going to spend, and keep only a minimum (ie. what you can afford to lose) in the debit card account. I also recommend Paypal. One friend I know has two paypal accounts. One is where he receives money, the other is where he spends it (he has a Paypal debit card.) He sends money from one account to the other only when he needs to spend it. The point is, if theres no money backing up the debit card, the thieves cant get much. Or you can buy an EBT card which is even safer. Yeah, I know this is a little bit inconvenient, but its like having locks on your car doors. A little bit of inconvenience protects the contents.
