The ideological standard-bearers and cadre closest to the nucleus of the Islamic Republican regime were supposed to be, at the beginning of their mandate, spirit in a spiritless world, maintaining their distance from ultramodern technologies like nuclear energy. Theyve become anxious, because they know that this is an indicator of the fundamentally contemporary character of the system. It is precisely this anxiety that reveals the profound connection between modern technics and a religious form of government. Its no accident that theyre nervous; they know that turning back from their nuclear ambitions could change their situation in the political arena, and so they keep things in a state of flux and tension. They know that neither god, nor religious law, nor even the militias are their true guardians: modern technics are. What power might compete with these technical anxieties? And where is it? To be sought among their enemies, certainly. An alternative current which, preferring the spirit of modernity to modernization, strives to use modern values to define and perpetuate the 79 revolution. 79 is the ideal which, despite its dependence on various social and political currents, dismisses spiritual anxiety out of hand. It is the belief in limits.
