The intellectually stagnant swamp that is modern liberalism could use more of Bill Mahers clarity on the issue of cultural superiority. But Mahers atheism and lifestyle preferences require an ahistoric view of the world. The truth is, all the Liberal values we hold dear--self-governance, free speech, free religious exercise, womens rights, the abolition of slavery, the rule of law, protection of private property, meritocracy, care for the poor and indigent, harnessing science for the betterment of the human condition, &etc.--are derived from the long tradition of Judeo-Christian theology. They are found in the Bible. Theres a reason why The Enlightenment happened in the West rather than the East. The Liberal values of Western Civ. did not spontaneously appear in a vacuum. And without the Judeo-Christian foundation which Maher loves to subvert, such a society will crumble--is crumbling. (Viewer discretion. This is Maher, after all.)
